SR&ED Calculator

Basic SR&ED Refund Calculator

This calculator is meant to provide a quick, unofficial look at how much your business could potentially recover using the SR&ED program. We built it to give your company an easy way to get an idea of what SR&ED could offer so you can gauge if pursuing a claim is in your best interest.

This is by no means a complete calculation. It is generated without insight into your current tax situation. There are a few assumptions that are made & as well as some limitations:

  • Your fiscal year-end is December 31st.
  • Specified employees are not treated separately from unspecified employees.
  • No distinction is made between materials consumed and materials transformed.
  • In years where provincial tax credit rates change, the percentage has not been pro-rated.
  • Capital Expenditures are excluded, even in provinces that still offer this incentive.
  • Additional top-ups dependent on specific contracts with research institutions have been excluded.
  • Expenditure limits and business size are not accounted for.

Despite these limitations, we hope you will find this helpful when determining whether it’s worth pursuing this tax credit.

Limitations and Considerations:

  1. Estimation Basis: The calculations generated by the SR&ED calculator rely on the information input by the user and certain assumptions made by the algorithm. As such, the results are approximate and may not reflect the exact SR&ED tax credit or refund a company may be eligible for.
  2. Eligibility Criteria: Eligibility for SR&ED tax incentives is subject to a variety of factors, including but not limited to the nature of the research or development activities, the technological advancements achieved, and compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines and regulations.
  3. Professional Consultation Recommended: While the SR&ED calculator can provide a preliminary indication of potential benefits, it is not a substitute for professional advice from qualified tax consultants or CRA representatives. Every business situation is unique, and accurate assessment of SR&ED eligibility requires a thorough review of specific details by knowledgeable professionals.
  4. Updates and Changes: The SR&ED program regulations and guidelines may change over time. The calculator may not always reflect the most current policies and criteria set forth by the CRA. Users are encouraged to consult the official CRA website or seek professional advice to stay informed about any updates or changes to the SR&ED program.

Conclusion:

The SR&ED calculator is a tool designed to assist users in estimating potential SR&ED tax incentives based on provided information. However, it is important to recognize its limitations and the complexities involved in determining eligibility for SR&ED benefits. Users are encouraged to exercise caution, seek professional advice, and refer to official CRA resources for accurate and up-to-date information regarding SR&ED tax incentives.
